Following Jesus With Perseverance and Discipline

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.  And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.  Hebrews 12:1-2a

  •  In his book 90 Minutes in Heaven, Don Piper tells of God’s purpose for his life which he is trying to fulfil with perseverance and discipline.
  •  Hebrews 12 begins with a reminder of the great cloud of witnesses who, as it were, cheer us on from the grandstands.
  •  The writer then addresses 3 questions:
  1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A FOLLOWER OF JESUS?
  •  We are to throw off what hinders us and leave behind the sin that entangles.  No Christian need be weighed down by unconfessed sin, unresolved resentments or ungodly habits.
  •  We are to run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  We are not expected to sprint – the Christian life is more a long-distance event.
  •  We are to look to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.  Our goal is not a winning tape but Jesus who shows us the way and helps us in our need.

2.  WHAT CORRECTION DO WE NEED?

  •  We are to remember God’s word.  God disciplines us because he loves us.
  •  We are to remember God’s care.  Because God cares he wants to correct and adjust our behaviour.
  •  We are to remember God’s purpose for us.  Hardships and painful experiences make us fit for service.

3.  WHAT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY WHEN FACED WITH LIFE’S CHALLENGES?

  •  We are to choose to overcome any despondency.  Everyone is tempted to be discouraged and despairing.  It is then that we need each other.
  •  We are to maintain harmony.  Don’t take out frustration on the closest ones.
  •  We are to pursue holiness.  We are to follow Jesus’ example.
  •  We are not to fall short of the grace of God.  Don’t ignore what God offers.
  •  We are to prevent defilement.  Don’t be like Esau and trample on God-given privileges.
